Minaret

Minaret \min-uh-RET; MIN-uh-ret\ is a tower or pillar in or near a mosque where the call to prayer is called. Usually it is a slender tower with balconies.

I have been surrounded by Muslim friends but I failed to ask what's the tower in mosques called, which is almost equivalent to a belfry for Catholic churches. Now I know that it is called minaret.
